Out Of Breath: Drake Bay, Costa Rica

Welcome to the sixteenth episode in the Out Of Breath series! This run in Drake Bay occurred on the 28th of March, 2018.

After leaving Nicaragua, we went to spend a bit over two weeks at a "workaway" (basically you do a few hours of work a day in exchange for a place to stay and food) in Costa Rica. I wasn't super enthusiastic about it at first, but it turned out to be far better than I ever expected.

The actual work was a mix of interesting and routine. The interesting part was helping the owner build a proposal for selling her business. The routine part was occasionally helping with some of the guests (who were quite nice and interesting actually, just not the type of work I enjoy as much). We also walked the dog a lot, I did some cooking (this was nice) and we helped out with a few things around the house (we lived in the same house as the owner, right on the beach).

Which finally takes me to the running part. I was actually getting a decent amount of exercise the whole time we were here, with the dog going on walks a few times during the day, Clo and I taking hikes in the rain forest and along the beach and just generally doing things. The only times to really do a run were in the morning or evening, and I decided to do one on the evening before we left Costa Rica.

It's hard to describe how beautiful it was where we were staying. Scarlet macaws eating fruits in the trees by the porch, monkeys screaming, lizards walking around the yard, huge frogs at night, bats, a sloth in the trees nearby... it was incredible. And the run was barefoot in the sand along the bay, one of my favorite ways to run (I didn't know it before this trip, but I've done it a few times now). At the end, Clo and Rasta (the owners dog) joined me for the last bit.

What an amazing place to run.
